You got the email saying your background check passed and you're approved to dash. You opened the Dasher app expecting to start immediately — and instead the app shows a screen saying you need to "complete activation," or it just doesn't show the Dash Now button. Approval and activation are two separate steps. This guide walks through the activation flow, the documents and agreements you'll need to consent to, and the most common reasons activation gets stuck along with how to unstick it.

If you're earlier in the journey, see How to Become a DoorDash Driver for the signup walkthrough.

What's in this guide

Approval vs activation — what the difference is

This is the source of most confusion:

Approval = your background check passed. The "you're approved to dash" email arrived in your inbox.

Activation = your account is fully set up to receive orders. Until activation is complete, you'll see Dash Now grayed out, or the app will route you through a setup flow instead of letting you go online.

Both are required. Approval comes from DoorDash's screening. Activation is on you to complete inside the Dasher app.

The reason for two steps: approval gates risk (background check, identity verification). Activation gates readiness (you've agreed to the contractor terms, set up payment, completed any required orientation). DoorDash separates them so the screening can be batch-processed independently of the Dasher's own setup pace.

The activation steps in order

Walk through these in the order the Dasher app presents them:

Step 1 — Sign in. Open the Dasher app, enter the email and password you used during application. Verify your identity via SMS code or email link.

Step 2 — Complete the contractor agreement. DoorDash presents a 1099 contractor agreement that confirms you understand: - You're an independent contractor, not an employee. - You're responsible for your own taxes. - You have the right to control how, when, and where you work. - You're not entitled to employee benefits.

Read it. Tap to electronically sign and accept. You cannot skip this step — without consent, you can't activate.

Step 3 — Confirm your vehicle type. The app shows the vehicle you selected during application. Confirm or change. Bike, scooter, and on-foot modes are available in select markets — see DoorDash on a Bike or Scooter if you want to switch.

Step 4 — Set up payment method. Pick one: - Weekly direct deposit (default) — connect your bank account for Monday payouts. - DasherDirectSubject to approval. Order the DasherDirect Visa card for instant pay. - Fast PayFees apply. Daily cashout to your linked debit card.

For day-one simplicity, weekly direct deposit is fine. You can always switch later.

Step 5 — Allow location and notifications. The app prompts for permissions. Approve both: - Location: Always (not just "While Using"). Otherwise dispatch behavior is degraded. - Notifications: On. Without notifications, you'll miss most order offers.

Step 6 — Review safety and delivery basics. Some markets show a short orientation video or quiz covering core delivery procedures (handoff types, photo proof, customer interaction). Watch it through; it sometimes ends with a quiz.

Step 7 — Confirm your starting zone. The app shows your dash zone on a map. Confirm or adjust. This is the area you'll be dispatched from when you tap Dash Now.

Step 8 — Tap Dash Now or Schedule a Dash. Activation is complete. You're ready for your first delivery.

What you'll need to complete activation

Have these ready before you start:

  • The login credentials you used during application (email + password).
  • Phone number on file (for SMS verification).
  • Bank account details if using direct deposit (routing number + account number) — your bank's app or a check makes this easy.
  • A government-issued ID handy in case any verification step needs reconfirmation.
  • 5–10 minutes of uninterrupted time. Don't try to do this between meetings.

You shouldn't need to upload documents during activation — those were submitted during application. If activation prompts you to re-upload your driver's license or insurance, something flagged your application post-approval; contact support.

Common reasons activation gets stuck

If activation isn't progressing as expected:

1. The contractor agreement won't load. Try the Dasher app on a different network (Wi-Fi vs mobile data). Force-close the app and reopen. If still failing, log in via the desktop Dasher portal on a browser to complete the agreement step.

2. The app loops back to the start of activation. Cache issue. Force-close, clear app cache (Android: Settings → Apps → Dasher → Storage → Clear Cache), reopen. On iOS, uninstall and reinstall the app.

3. Bank verification fails. Re-enter the routing and account numbers carefully. Don't use copy-paste from a screenshot — type them. If still failing, switch to a different bank account or use DasherDirect (Subject to approval) as an alternative.

4. "Pending review" message after activation steps. Sometimes DoorDash queues a final manual review after you complete activation. This typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Don't panic; it's not a re-screening.

5. Vehicle inspection required (some markets). A few markets require a vehicle inspection (especially for motorcycles/scooters). The app surfaces an "Inspection required" prompt — follow the linked instructions, schedule the inspection, and activation completes after.

6. The Dasher orientation quiz won't accept your answers. Read each question carefully — some quiz questions have nuanced "best practice" answers that aren't obvious. If you fail, you can usually retake immediately.

7. SMS verification code doesn't arrive. Try email verification instead. If neither works, contact support — there's a known intermittent SMS issue some carriers have with Dasher activation codes.

How long activation takes

Typical activation takes 10–15 minutes of active time once you're approved. Some markets add 24–48 hours of "post-activation review" before Dash Now becomes fully unlocked, especially for markets with high Dasher volume or specific compliance requirements.

The breakdown:

  • Steps 1–4 (sign in, contractor agreement, vehicle, payment): 5 minutes
  • Steps 5–6 (permissions, orientation): 3–5 minutes
  • Step 7 (starting zone): 1 minute
  • Step 8 (first Dash Now): immediate, OR 24–48 hour wait if your market does post-activation review

Plan to complete all of this in one sitting if possible. Coming back to half-finished activation introduces friction.

What to do if you're truly stuck

If you've worked through this guide and activation still isn't completing:

  1. Contact Dasher support via the app's chat. Tap the menu icon → Help → Chat. Describe the specific step where activation fails.
  2. Try the desktop Dasher portal at dasher.doordash.com. Some activation issues clear up on web that don't on mobile.
  3. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Dasher app — sometimes clears persistent state issues.
  4. Wait 24 hours. A small subset of activation issues are queue/processing related and resolve overnight without intervention.
  5. Document everything. Take screenshots of any error messages, save the timestamps. Useful if support escalates.

If you've waited 7+ days post-approval and still can't activate, escalate — call DoorDash Dasher support directly (the official number is published in the app's Help section). See How to Contact DoorDash Dasher Support for the full contact-path map.

FAQ

Will my approval expire if I don't activate right away? Approvals don't typically expire, but if you wait many months without activating, DoorDash may require a fresh background check before allowing activation. The standard window is generous — weeks or months — but indefinite delay can require re-screening.

Can I activate from a desktop browser? Some activation steps work on desktop (the contractor agreement, payment setup); others require the mobile app (notifications permission, location services testing). For most users, the mobile app is the cleaner path.

Do I have to take the orientation quiz? If your market shows it, yes — it's gating. The quiz is short and covers basic delivery procedures. Failing once doesn't disqualify you; you can retake.

Can I switch payment methods after activation? Yes, anytime. Account → Earnings → Payment Method. The change typically takes 1–2 pay cycles to take effect.

Why does the app keep asking me to verify my identity? Sometimes DoorDash adds a step-up identity verification prompt for fraud prevention. Complete it with the documents the app requests. If it asks for documents you've already submitted, contact support.

Will my activation be reviewed manually? Most activations complete automatically. Some are sampled for manual review (especially for newer markets, complex applications, or specific compliance flags). Manual review typically adds 24–48 hours.

Can my partner activate on my account? No. Each Dasher account is for one person, and account-sharing violates DoorDash's terms. Each Dasher needs their own approval, activation, and ID verification.

What if I selected the wrong vehicle type during application? You can change in Account → Vehicle Type, but be aware: switching to a vehicle type that requires additional documents (e.g., from car to motorcycle, which needs an M endorsement on your license) may require uploading new documents and re-verification.
