If you’re considering leaving Monarch Money — whether because of pricing, missing features, or specific use-case fit — there are genuine alternatives. But before switching, it’s worth asking: which specific gap is driving the change? Most issues that lead to cancellation are actually fixable in Monarch (different data provider, missed setting, miscategorized account).
This guide covers the legitimate alternatives by use case, plus when going back to Monarch makes sense.

When to stay with Monarch
Before reading the alternatives, the case for staying:

Stay if you fit any of these:
- You’re a household with shared finances — Monarch’s Shared Views is the strongest couples experience
- You value the Sankey diagram — no other major app has it
- You use the AI Assistant — also unique to Monarch
- You’re a Mint refugee and want the closest replacement
- You actively budget and value Flex/Category dual modes — most flexible budgeting in the category
- You care about integrated Goals 3.0 — Save Up + Pay Down + Investment goals with growth modeling
- You’re already paying $99.99 (or $49.99 with SMARTMONEY) and the value is there for you
If your specific gripe with Monarch is fixable (sync issues, missed feature, didn’t know about an existing capability), our other walkthroughs likely solve it:

The legitimate alternatives
YNAB — for envelope-style budgeting
Why pick YNAB: You want strict zero-based envelope budgeting. Every dollar gets a job before the month starts.
Pricing: $109/yr (or $14.99/mo) — $109 first year promotional pricing, then standard rates. 34-day free trial, no credit card required.
What YNAB does that Monarch doesn’t:
- Pure envelope/zero-based methodology
- “Age your money” metric (how old is the money in your accounts?)
- Stricter forced budgeting discipline
- No sales pressure (subscription-funded only)
- Long-running active community (“YNAB Reddit,” “YNAB on Twitter”)
What YNAB doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- No Sankey diagram
- No native couples Shared Views (couples often share login or pay 2x)
- No AI Assistant
- No Goals 3.0 (different goal model)
- More expensive ($109/yr vs $49.99 with SMARTMONEY)
Pick YNAB if: You’re a “every dollar a job” person and Monarch’s Flex Budgeting feels too loose. YNAB’s discipline is genuinely transformative for some users.
For a deeper head-to-head, see Monarch vs YNAB.
Empower (formerly Personal Capital) — for free investment tracking
Why pick Empower: You want a free dashboard for net worth + investment tracking and don’t actively budget.
Pricing: Dashboard is free permanently. Optional advisory services: 0.49–0.89% AUM (with $100K minimum).
What Empower does that Monarch doesn’t:
- Best-in-class free investment dashboard
- Robust retirement planner with Monte Carlo simulations
- 401(k) fee analyzer
- Investment Checkup tool (asset allocation, fees, risk)
- Free permanently for the dashboard
What Empower doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- Real budget tools (Empower’s are basic)
- Couples / household sharing (Empower is single-user)
- Sankey diagram
- AI Assistant
- Recurring subscription auto-detection
- Receipt scanning
- Retail Sync (Amazon, Target)
Catch: Empower will pitch you advisory services repeatedly. Politely declining is part of being a free user.
Pick Empower if: You’re investment-focused, don’t budget actively, and don’t mind sales calls. Or use it alongside Monarch (covered in our Monarch vs Empower comparison).

Rocket Money — for subscription tracking + bill negotiation
Why pick Rocket Money: You want a passive app focused on finding subscriptions and negotiating bills, not active budgeting.
Pricing: Free tier for tracking. Premium: $4-12/month (you pick) for bill negotiation, smart savings, advanced budgeting.
What Rocket Money does that Monarch doesn’t:
- Concierge bill negotiation (Premium) — Rocket Money calls your providers to negotiate down
- Aggressive subscription detection (sometimes too aggressive)
- Automatic subscription cancellation request service
- Smart Savings (auto-allocates spare cash)
- Free tier exists
What Rocket Money doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- Real budgeting tools (Rocket Money’s are basic)
- Couples Shared Views
- Sankey diagram
- Goals 3.0
- Investment depth
- Receipt scanning
- Retail Sync
Pick Rocket Money if: You want passive subscription audit + bill negotiation, not active budget management. Or use alongside Monarch — many couples we’ve talked to use Rocket Money for cancellation services + Monarch for budget.

Pricing: $42.99/yr (frequently 50% off promos drop to ~$21/yr first year). 30-day money-back guarantee.
What Simplifi does that Monarch doesn’t:

- “Spending Plan” forward-looking budget
- Cheapest paid app in this category
What Simplifi doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- Couples Shared Views
- Sankey diagram
- AI Assistant
- Goals 3.0 (lighter goals)

- Data ownership (Google Sheets / Excel files you control forever)
- Power-user features (formulas, pivot tables, charts)
- Daily email summary
- Community templates library
- 21,000+ institutions

- Goals 3.0 (Tiller relies on community templates)
- AI Assistant
- Investment depth (Plus tier)
Pick Tiller if: You love spreadsheets and want maximum customization. Or you specifically want data ownership outside vendor clouds.

Honeydue — for couples-only
Why pick Honeydue: You want a free couples-focused mobile app with chat and bill alerts.

What Honeydue does that Monarch doesn’t:
- Free
- Per-account privacy controls (you can hide accounts from your partner)
- In-app chat with your partner
- Emoji reactions on transactions
- Couples-first design
What Honeydue doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- Web access (Honeydue is mobile-only)
- Real budgeting tools
- Goals 3.0
- Sankey diagram
- AI Assistant
- Investment tracking
- Reports
- Receipt scanning
Pick Honeydue if: You and your partner want a free couples-tracking app and don’t need full budget tools. Or your finances are simple and Monarch feels like overkill.

Copilot Money — for iOS users wanting beauty
Why pick Copilot: You want a beautifully-designed iOS-first app with solid budgeting.
Pricing: $95/yr or $13/mo. iOS-only at launch (Mac app added later, no web).
What Copilot does that Monarch doesn’t:
- Best-looking interface in the category (subjective but widely shared)
- iOS-native experience with strong attention to detail
- AI categorization (genuinely good)
What Copilot doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- Web access (limited; mostly iOS / Mac)
- Real couples / household experience
- Sankey diagram
- AI Assistant for natural-language queries
- Goals 3.0 (Copilot’s are simpler)
- Multi-platform (Android users are out of luck)
Pick Copilot if: You’re an iOS / Mac household, you value design over feature breadth, and you don’t need couples support.
For a deeper comparison, see Monarch vs Copilot Money.

Quicken Classic — for desktop power users
Why pick Quicken Classic: You want maximum power, you’re comfortable with desktop software, and you have years/decades of historical data.
Pricing: $59.99-94.99/yr depending on tier (Deluxe / Premier / Home, Business & Rental).
What Quicken Classic does that Monarch doesn’t:
- Decades of historical data import (QFX/QIF)
- Bill payment from inside the app (Quicken Bill Manager)
- Loan amortization schedules
- Detailed tax category tracking
- Property and rental management features
- Lifetime planner tool
What Quicken Classic doesn’t do that Monarch does:
- Modern web/mobile experience (desktop-first)

What about going free?
If your reason for leaving is purely cost, the free options are:
Empower — Best free option. Strong investment dashboard, weak budgeting, sales pressure for advisor services.
Rocket Money free tier — Subscription tracking, basic budget, free. Bill negotiation requires Premium.
Honeydue — Free couples-focused mobile app. Light on budgeting depth.
Personal spreadsheet — Truly free if you build it yourself. Time-intensive.
Mint (RIP) — Was the dominant free option until Intuit shut it down March 2024. Not coming back.
The honest truth: all the free options have real limitations vs Monarch. They’re free because they’re either narrower in scope (Honeydue, Rocket Money free) or monetize through other channels (Empower’s advisor sales, Rocket Money Premium upsells).
If $49.99/year (with SMARTMONEY) for Monarch’s full feature set sounds expensive, it’s worth doing the math: that’s $4.16/month, covers both partners, and is cheaper than YNAB ($109/yr per user) or Quicken Premier ($75/yr) or Copilot ($95/yr).
Common questions
If I cancel Monarch, can I export my data?
Yes — CSV export is available before cancellation (How to Export Transactions from Monarch). Your data is yours.
Will my data import cleanly into the alternatives?
Mostly yes. YNAB, Tiller, and Quicken Classic accept CSV imports. Empower and Rocket Money rebuild from your bank connections rather than CSV imports. Some metadata (custom categories, goals) doesn’t transfer.
What if I want to come back to Monarch later?
You can re-subscribe any time. If you cancel within 30 days, your data and connections are preserved. Beyond 30 days, you’ll re-connect accounts but Monarch retains historical transaction data for re-association.
Is there a “Monarch lite” version?
No. Monarch has Core ($99.99/yr) and Plus ($299/yr). Both are paid. There’s no free tier. The 7-day free trial is the only “free” option.
What if I want a hybrid approach?
Common — many users do this. Monarch for primary budget + couples view, Empower for investment dashboard, Rocket Money for subscription cancellation. Total cost is often less than YNAB alone.
Which alternative is best for ADHD / executive function challenges?
Subjectively: Rocket Money (passive — does work for you). YNAB requires the most mental energy of any tool. Monarch is in the middle — automated transactions, but you need to engage with budget weekly to keep it useful.
Best alternative for international users?
Most apps in this list are US-focused. For international users, options narrow: PocketSmith (UK/AU/NZ), MoneyDashboard (UK), Money Lover (multi-region). Monarch supports some international banks but its strength is the US market.
