Login issues

Sequential fixes:

  1. Verify your URL: empower.com (or empowermyretirement.com for 401(k) participants — different URL).
  2. Check caps lock: passwords are case-sensitive.
  3. Try password manager auto-fill to rule out typos.
  4. Sign out and back in if you’re stuck partial-logged-in.
  5. Clear browser cache if using web.
  6. Try incognito/private browsing.
  7. Different browser — Chrome vs. Safari vs. Firefox.
  8. Different device to rule out device-specific issues.
  9. Update Empower app if mobile.

If “Account locked” appears, see Password reset below.

Password reset

  1. On the login screen, click Forgot Password.
  2. Enter your account email.
  3. Empower sends a reset link (typically within 5 minutes; check spam).
  4. Click the link → set a new password.
  5. Sign in with the new password.

If reset email doesn’t arrive:

  • Check spam/junk folder.
  • Verify the email matches what’s on file.
  • If you’ve changed email, contact support@empower.com.

If you’re locked out due to multiple failed attempts:

  • Wait 15-30 minutes before trying again.
  • Or use forgot password to bypass.

Account not syncing

This is the most common Empower complaint. Causes:

  1. Yodlee re-authentication required — your bank’s session token expired.
  2. Bank changed its login flow — Yodlee needs to update.
  3. Bank-side MFA is interrupting Yodlee’s automatic refresh.
  4. Bank temporarily blocked Yodlee for security reasons.
  5. Bank requires identity reverification.

Fixes:

  1. Empower → SettingsLinked Accounts → click the affected account.
  2. Click Reconnect or Update Credentials.
  3. Re-enter your bank login.
  4. Complete any Yodlee MFA prompts within 60 seconds.
  5. Wait 24 hours for sync to refresh.

If still not syncing:

  • Some banks (especially small credit unions) sync poorly. Consider manual entry.
  • Check Yodlee’s status page for known outages.
  • Contact Empower support with your bank name + error message.

App crashes / freezes

If the Empower app crashes or freezes:

  1. Force-quit and reopen.
  2. Update the app via App Store / Play Store.
  3. Update phone OS.
  4. Restart phone.
  5. Free up storage — Empower needs available memory.
  6. Clear app cache (Android: Settings → Apps → Empower → Storage → Clear Cache).
  7. Reinstall the app as last resort.

Specific Empower app issues that have surfaced:

  • Older Android versions sometimes have rendering issues with newer Empower app builds.
  • iOS users on older iPhones may experience slow loading on the dashboard.

Yodlee aggregation errors

Yodlee is Empower’s data aggregator (alternative to Plaid). If you see “Yodlee error” or “data refresh failed”:

  1. Specific bank’s connection broke. Reconnect via Empower → Linked Accounts.
  2. Yodlee’s broader system is having issues — check status.yodlee.com.
  3. Your bank stopped supporting Yodlee — happens when banks change aggregator policies. You may need a workaround (manual entry).

For complete bank-by-bank troubleshooting, the issues are similar to Plaid issues at other apps. See Rocket Money Won’t Connect to Bank Troubleshooting for analogous fixes.

401(k) login specifically

Empower’s 401(k) site is separate from the personal dashboard:

  • Personal dashboard: empower.com.
  • 401(k) participant: empowermyretirement.com (or your employer-specific URL).

Common 401(k) login issues:

  1. Wrong URL — make sure you’re on the 401(k) site if you have an employer-administered 401(k).
  2. Default credentials for new participants — usually first-time login uses last 4 of SSN as password; reset on first login.
  3. Employer-specific login — some plans use SSO (Single Sign-On) via your employer’s portal.
  4. Plan blackout — when employer changes 401(k) administrators, brief blackout periods occur.

If you can’t access your 401(k):

  • Call your HR department first — they may have employer-specific login info.
  • Call Empower 401(k) line: number on your plan documents (varies by plan).

Net worth showing wrong amount

If Empower’s Net Worth shows a wrong amount:

  1. Check linked accounts — make sure all have synced recently.
  2. Yodlee misclassification — sometimes accounts show as wrong type (savings vs. investment).
  3. Excluded accounts — some accounts may be set to exclude from net worth.
  4. Manual additions that double-count — if you manually added an account that’s also linked, it’s counted twice.
  5. Real estate value is auto-estimated via Zillow API; can be wildly off.
  6. Recent contribution / withdrawal that hasn’t synced yet.

To fix:

  • Empower → Linked Accounts → review each account’s classification.
  • Manually adjust any miscategorized accounts.
  • Force a sync on accounts (click Refresh).
  • Wait 24 hours for full reconciliation.

Notifications not working

If you’re missing alerts:

  1. App notification permissions: Settings → Notifications → Empower → Allow.
  2. Within Empower: Profile → Notification Preferences → enable the notification types you want.
  3. iOS Focus modes / Do Not Disturb: ensure Empower is allowed.
  4. Android battery optimization: some Android phones aggressively kill background apps.
  5. Email filtering: emails from Empower may be in spam.

Two-factor authentication problems

If 2FA codes are failing:

  1. Time sync issue: check your phone’s clock. Time-based 2FA (like Google Authenticator) requires accurate time.
  2. Wrong device: 2FA may be tied to a specific phone; if you got a new phone, you need to migrate.
  3. Code expired: codes refresh every 30 seconds; enter quickly.
  4. Wrong code source: SMS vs. authenticator app — make sure you’re using the right one.

If 2FA is broken entirely:

  • Empower has 2FA recovery via email or backup codes.
  • Contact support if all options fail.
Most Empower app issues are sync-related — Yodlee periodically needs reconnection. Don't be surprised if you have to re-link bank accounts every few months.

Is Empower down right now?

Sometimes the issue isn’t on your end:

  • Check downdetector.com/status/empower for community reports.
  • Search Twitter/X for “Empower down” for real-time reports.
  • Check status pages: status.yodlee.com and empower.com/help.

If many users report issues, it’s a platform-wide outage. Wait 30-60 minutes; most resolve quickly.

For 401(k) participants, your employer’s plan may also be affected by Empower outages.

FAQ

Why does my account stop syncing every few months?

Yodlee tokens periodically expire. Re-authenticate to refresh.

Can I use Empower without 2FA?

Yes initially, but 2FA is highly recommended for accounts with linked bank credentials.

What if my bank doesn’t show in Yodlee’s list?

Some smaller banks aren’t supported. Use manual entry as a workaround.

Why does my net worth fluctuate wildly?

Real-time market data + Zillow real estate estimates fluctuate. Yodlee sync delays can also cause apparent jumps.

Can I have two Empower accounts?

Generally no — Empower expects one account per user. Multiple accounts may be flagged.

Why is my retirement projection different today vs. yesterday?

Default calculator updates with market changes, contribution updates, and date progression.

Will reinstalling the app lose my data?

No — your data lives on Empower’s servers, not your device.

What if Empower’s app keeps freezing on startup?

Reinstall. Or use empower.com on browser as a fallback.

Can I export my Empower data?

Limited. Some PDF exports available; full data export typically requires advisory client status.

Will Empower help me reset my 401(k) password?

For employer-administered 401(k), call your plan’s customer service line. The general Empower support may not have access to your specific 401(k) account.
