Quick answer: to become a DoorDash driver (a "Dasher"), go to northvilletech.co/dasher, enter your zip code, upload your driver's license and insurance, consent to a Checkr background check, and download the Dasher app. Per DoorDash's published Signup Process, background checks generally take 5 to 7 business days (as fast as one business day in some cases). Subject to background check and availability.

This guide walks through the full process: how to apply, how to register, what the requirements are, how long the background check takes, what to do after you're approved, and how to handle the situations that trip up most new Dashers. It covers the same flow whether you call it "signing up to dash," "applying for DoorDash," "registering as a Dasher," or "creating a Dasher account" — they're all the same thing.

Watch: How to Become a DoorDash Driver (Full Walkthrough)

What is a DoorDash driver (Dasher)?

A "Dasher" is what DoorDash calls its drivers — the independent contractors who pick up orders from restaurants, stores, and merchants and deliver them to customers. Dashers are not DoorDash employees. They are 1099 independent contractors, which means you control your own schedule, run your own time, and manage your own taxes.

When people search for things like "sign up doordash," "apply for doordash," "register with doordash," "become a dasher," "how to enroll in doordash," "how to join doordash," or "create dasher account" — they all refer to the same single application process described in this guide.

You can dash by car, by motorcycle, by scooter, by bike (including e-bike) where supported, or in a small number of urban markets on foot. The most common path — and the one available in essentially every market — is by car.

Requirements: do you qualify?

DoorDash's published Dasher requirements are intentionally accessible. Most people qualify without issue. Here's what you'll need before you start your application, sourced from DoorDash's official "Requirements for Dashing" article in the Dasher Help Center.

Personal requirements

  • Age: 18+ in most US states. Per DoorDash's published age policy, new applicants must be at least 19 in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. California requires new applicants to be 21. Existing California Dashers already active are not affected by the 21 rule.
  • Social Security Number for the background check and tax purposes
  • Bank account for direct deposit of your earnings
  • Valid email address and a US or Canadian phone number

Vehicle requirements

Per DoorDash's Help Center: "there are no specific vehicle requirements." If you're delivering by car, you need a valid domestic driver's license and valid personal auto insurance. DoorDash doesn't publish a minimum model year — older vehicles work fine as long as they're registered, insured, and operational.

Depending on your location, DoorDash also supports alternative vehicle types:

  • Car — available in essentially every DoorDash market
  • Motorcycle — available in select markets
  • Scooter — available in select markets
  • Bicycle or e-bike — available in dense urban markets
  • On-foot — available in a small number of dense urban submarkets

Vehicle type availability varies by market. The sign-up flow shows what's available in your zip code after you enter it.

Smartphone requirements

Per DoorDash's Dasher Help Center, you need an iPhone or Android smartphone to use the Dasher app. DoorDash notes that "newer phones with more than 3GB of RAM crash and freeze less than others" — if you've had issues with the Dasher app on an older device, an upgrade can help. A working data plan is required (the app uses internet to receive orders and navigate).

Auto insurance

If you'll be delivering by car, you're required to maintain your own auto insurance. DoorDash carries a commercial auto insurance policy that covers up to $1,000,000 in bodily injury and/or property damage to third parties arising out of accidents while on an active delivery (per DoorDash's published insurance policy summary; subject to policy terms, conditions, and state law). Your personal policy is the primary coverage; DoorDash's commercial coverage applies to incidents during an active delivery.

Background check eligibility

Every applicant goes through a background check via Checkr, a third-party screening provider. DoorDash follows Fair Chance hiring practices — meaning a past offense doesn't automatically disqualify you. We have a full guide on this: DoorDash Background Check: Timeline, What's Checked, How to Pass.

For a deeper breakdown of every requirement (vehicle exceptions, insurance specifics, what disqualifies you, market-by-market differences), see our DoorDash Driver Requirements (2026): Do You Qualify? guide.

🚗 You Qualify — Start Your Dasher Application →

Step-by-step: how to apply, register, and create your Dasher account

The sign-up flow is the same whether you call it "applying," "registering," "enrolling," or "creating an account." Here are the six steps from start to first delivery, per DoorDash's published Signup Process.

Step 1: Start your Dasher application

Go to northvilletech.co/dasher to begin. You'll be asked for:

  • First and last name
  • Email address (this becomes your Dasher login)
  • Phone number
  • Zip code where you plan to deliver
  • Password

Use the zip code for the area where you'll actually be dashing — this determines your "market" and which vehicle types are available to you.

Step 2: Download the Dasher app and submit profile info

Download the Dasher app (this is a different app from the customer-facing DoorDash app):

Sign in with the credentials you created in Step 1 and continue your application.

Step 3: Choose your vehicle type

DoorDash will ask you what you'll deliver with:

  • Car (most common, available everywhere)
  • Motorcycle / scooter (select markets)
  • Bicycle / e-bike (select dense urban markets)
  • On-foot (rare, dense urban submarkets only)

Most new Dashers choose car. If you're unsure whether your market supports bike or scooter delivery, the sign-up flow will show the options available for your zip code.

Step 4: Submit your documents

Upload these to your application:

  • Driver's license — clear photo of front and back, if delivering by car
  • Vehicle insurance — proof of active personal auto insurance covering the vehicle you'll use
  • Profile / selfie photo — clear face photo taken through the Dasher app for identity verification

Clear, well-lit document photos help the background check move quickly. Blurry or partial images can require re-upload and add days to the timeline.

DoorDash uses Checkr to run a background check on every applicant. You'll provide your Social Security number and date of birth, and consent to a motor vehicle and criminal background check as part of the application. The check covers identity verification, criminal history, and your motor vehicle record. Consent is required to proceed — there's no way to skip it.

For a full breakdown of what's checked, what disqualifies you, and what to do if you're delayed or denied, see our DoorDash Background Check Guide.

Step 6: Add bank info and activate your Red Card (if your market uses one)

Add your bank account information to receive your earnings via direct deposit. DoorDash pays weekly by default; faster options (Fast Pay and DasherDirect) are described below.

In some markets, DoorDash mails Dashers a Red Card — a prepaid debit card used to pay for restaurant orders that aren't integrated with DoorDash's tablet system. If your market uses the Red Card, activate it in the Dasher app under Settings → Red Card when it arrives. Many markets don't require it; even where it's used, only a small share of orders need it.

That's the full sign-up

The above six steps are everything DoorDash requires to register as a Dasher. The process is intentionally simple — no interview, no phone screen, no manager meeting. If you meet the requirements and your background check clears, you're approved.

How long does the background check take?

Per DoorDash's published Signup Process article, the Checkr background check "can be processed as fast as one business day, but generally should take between five to seven business days." The exact timing depends on county court records, your motor vehicle record, and the volume of new applicants in your market.

You'll receive an email from Checkr when the check is complete. If you haven't heard back after the published 5 to 7 business day window, log into your Checkr candidate portal (linked in your original Checkr email) to check the status.

Common reasons for delays (per Checkr's published candidate guidance and DoorDash help articles):

  • Court records taking time to process — varies by county
  • Blurry, hard-to-read document photos requiring re-upload
  • Common name causing extra ID verification
  • High volume of new applicants in your market

If your check is still pending well past the published window, contact Checkr directly via the candidate portal. If they say everything's clear but DoorDash hasn't activated your account, message DoorDash Support through the in-app chat.

For the full background-check deep dive — including what disqualifies you, what counts as a "consider" vs. a "fail," and how to dispute incorrect information — see our DoorDash Background Check Guide.

Ready to apply? Per DoorDash's Signup Process, most applicants clear the background check within 5 to 7 business days. Subject to background check and availability.

What happens after approval

When DoorDash approves your application, you'll get a confirmation and your Dasher app status changes from "Pending" to active. From there:

  1. Open the Dasher app and tap Dash Now to start a shift immediately, or Schedule a Dash to reserve a future time slot.
  2. Activate your Red Card if your market uses one (Settings → Red Card).
  3. Review the home screen — get familiar with the heat map (showing where orders are clustering), the Dash Now button, and the schedule grid.
  4. Pick your area. The heat map shows which neighborhoods are busiest. Start there.
  5. Accept your first order when one comes in. The Dasher app shows the restaurant name, the customer's general area, and the guaranteed payout for that delivery before you accept.
  6. Drive to pickup, hand the order off, mark it delivered. That's a delivery.

After your first delivery, DoorDash sends a Dasher activation kit with items like a food warming bag and (in Red Card markets) a Red Card.

How DoorDash driver pay works

For DoorDash's official pay framework, see DoorDash's canonical Dasher Pay article in the Dasher Help Center — it's the source of truth for how base pay is calculated, how Peak Pay and other promotions work, and how earnings vary by market.

At a high level, Dasher earnings come from three sources:

  • Base pay — DoorDash's per-delivery base, calculated by their algorithm.
  • Tips — 100% of customer tips go to the Dasher.
  • Promotions — Peak Pay (extra per-delivery during high-demand windows), Dasher Challenges (bonus for completing certain milestones), and other limited-time incentives.

You can get paid three ways:

  • Weekly direct deposit (default) — paid every Monday for the prior week's earnings.
  • Fast Pay — cash out daily. Fees apply.
  • DasherDirect — a Dasher-exclusive debit card with instant access to earnings after deliveries, plus cashback on gas. Subject to approval.

For the full breakdown of how Dasher pay actually works — base, tips, peak, promotions, and which payout method makes sense for which Dasher — see our How DoorDash Driver Pay Works (2026) guide.

Earn more per order as compared to restaurant orders. Actual earnings may differ and depend on factors like number of deliveries you accept and complete, time of day, location, and any costs. Hourly pay is calculated using average Dasher payouts while on a delivery (from the time you accept an order until the time you drop it off) over a 90 day period and includes compensation from tips, peak pay, and other incentives.

Why dash? Real benefits of being a Dasher

The main reason most people start dashing — and stick with it — comes down to control. You're not an employee. You're a 1099 independent contractor running your own delivery operation. That changes everything.

Total schedule flexibility. Dash during your lunch break, after the kids are in bed, on weekends, between job interviews, or all day every day. There's no fixed schedule, no minimum hours, and no boss telling you when to show up. Dash anytime: subject to availability.

Be your own boss. No managers. No team meetings. No timesheets. You decide which orders to accept, when to start, when to stop, and where to dash.

Tips go 100% to the Dasher. Friendly, on-time service often leads to better tips, and tips can add up across a productive shift.

Peak Pay during high-demand windows. During Friday dinners, rainy days, big local events, or any time DoorDash projects a surge in demand, base pay gets a Peak Pay bonus added on top.

Dasher Challenges. DoorDash regularly runs bonus challenges where completing a set number of deliveries in a set window earns extra. Worth keeping an eye on inside the app.

Get paid your way: - Weekly direct deposit — automatically deposited every Monday for the prior week's earnings. - Fast Pay — cash out daily. Fees apply. - DasherDirect — a Dasher-exclusive debit card with instant access to your earnings after deliveries, plus cashback on gas. Subject to approval.

Pro tip for choosing your hours: lunch and dinner are typically the consistent higher-volume windows for restaurants; weekends bring more orders; denser markets generally have shorter pickup-to-drop-off distances. The heat map inside the Dasher app shows you what's busy in real time — use it.

Tips for your first deliveries

1. Start during peak hours. Your first few deliveries take longer as you learn the app, the navigation, and the restaurants in your market. Lunch or dinner peaks mean more orders to choose from and more practice in less time.

2. Double-check the order at pickup. Before you leave the restaurant, glance at the receipt and confirm every item is in the bag. Missing items lead to customer complaints, which lower your ratings.

3. Use the in-app navigation. The Dasher app's built-in navigation includes gate codes, apartment numbers, and any delivery instructions left by customers. Use it for at least your first dozen deliveries — even if you know the area.

4. Communicate proactively. If a restaurant is running late, the order is short an item, or you can't find the address — text the customer through the in-app chat. A 5-second heads-up is the difference between a great rating and a 1-star.

5. Track your mileage from day one. As a 1099 contractor, every mile you drive while dashing is deductible at the IRS standard business mileage rate, which is 72.5 cents per mile for the 2026 tax year (per IRS Notice 2026-10). Use a free app like Stride or Hurdlr to auto-track. We have a complete guide: How to Track DoorDash Mileage for Taxes.

6. Keep your delivery bag organized. Hot orders go in an insulated bag. Cold orders separate. Drinks upright. A messy bag leads to spills, and spills lead to refunds taken from your earnings.

7. Don't take every order. You can accept or decline any offer. Low-paying long-distance orders sometimes aren't worth the gas. Watch the payout-to-mileage ratio before accepting.

What to do if your application is denied

A small share of applicants are denied. The most common reasons:

  • Background check disqualification. Recent felonies, DUIs, or major moving violations can result in a denial. Specific eligibility rules are set by DoorDash and applicable state law and vary by case.
  • MVR (motor vehicle record) issues. Multiple recent at-fault accidents, license suspensions, or reckless-driving charges.
  • Identity verification failure. Mismatched names, expired documents, or unreadable photo uploads.
  • Insurance issues. Lapsed or invalid auto insurance at the time of application.

If you're denied, Checkr will send you an Adverse Action notice listing the specific finding(s). You have the right to dispute incorrect information directly with Checkr. Common successful dispute scenarios:

  • A criminal record showing on your report that was actually expunged
  • A driving violation incorrectly attributed to you
  • An ID mismatch caused by a name change (marriage, etc.)

If your record is accurate but you were denied, the timing for a re-application depends on the specific finding and the applicable state's Fair Chance rules. Read the Adverse Action notice you received carefully — it identifies the specific finding and your dispute rights.

For the full background-check dispute path, see our DoorDash Background Check Guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign up for DoorDash online?

Yes — the entire application is online. You start at northvilletech.co/dasher, submit your info through the Dasher signup flow, upload your driver's license and insurance through the Dasher app, and consent to a background check. No in-person interview, no office visit.

How long does the DoorDash application take to complete?

DoorDash doesn't publish a specific time. The form itself is short; the document upload step takes as long as it takes you to upload clear photos of your driver's license, insurance, and a selfie. Most of the wait time is the background check (see below), not the form.

How long does the DoorDash background check take?

Per DoorDash's published Signup Process, the Checkr background check generally takes 5 to 7 business days, and can be processed as fast as one business day in some cases. The exact timing depends on county court records and your specific motor vehicle record.

How long does it take to become a DoorDash driver from start to first delivery?

The bulk of the wait is the background check, which DoorDash publishes as 5 to 7 business days (as fast as one). Add to that the time you spend on the application form and document upload, and the typical end-to-end timeline is about a week. Subject to background check and availability.

Do I need a car to deliver with DoorDash?

Not always. Per DoorDash's "Requirements for Dashing" article: "Depending on your location, you may also have the option to deliver using a motorcycle, bike, e-bike, or scooter." Most markets do support delivery by car as the primary option. The Dasher signup flow shows what's available for your zip code.

Can I apply for DoorDash with just a permit (not a full driver's license)?

DoorDash's published vehicle policy requires "a valid domestic driver's license" for car delivery. A learner's permit typically does not satisfy this. If you'll be using a bike or scooter (and your market supports it), the driver's license requirement may not apply — confirm at sign-up.

Can I apply for DoorDash with a foreign driver's license?

DoorDash's published policy requires a valid domestic driver's license for car delivery in the US. Driver's license requirements for non-car delivery types depend on your market. The sign-up flow validates this once you enter your information.

Does DoorDash do a hard credit check?

No. The Checkr background check is a criminal-history and motor-vehicle-record check; it doesn't include a credit pull and doesn't affect your credit score.

Can I drive for DoorDash and Uber Eats at the same time?

Yes. DoorDash does not require exclusivity. Many Dashers run multiple delivery apps simultaneously to keep their queue full. Just be sure to focus on whichever app has an active order — picking up an Uber Eats order while you have a DoorDash delivery in progress can violate DoorDash's Platform Access Policy.

Is DoorDash available in my area?

DoorDash operates across the US, Canada, and a handful of international markets. The fastest way to confirm availability for your zip code is to enter it at the Dasher sign-up page. The form tells you immediately whether you can dash from your zip.

Can I apply for DoorDash if I'm 18?

Yes — 18 is the minimum age in most US states. Per DoorDash's published age policy, you must be at least 19 in Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia, and 21 if you're a new applicant in California. The application validates your age against your zip code automatically.

Can I dash if I'm a permanent resident / on a visa?

DoorDash's sign-up flow verifies work-authorization eligibility as part of the application. Specific eligibility rules apply to non-citizens; the application surfaces what documentation is required for your situation.

How much do Dashers make?

Dasher pay varies by market, day, time, and the orders you accept. For DoorDash's official guidance on how pay is calculated, see DoorDash's Dasher Pay article. For our breakdown of the pay components, see How DoorDash Driver Pay Works (2026).

What is the DoorDash Red Card?

A prepaid debit card mailed to Dashers in markets that need it. It's used to pay for restaurant orders that aren't on DoorDash's tablet system. Most orders don't require the Red Card, but you'll want it activated if your market uses one.

How do I get paid?

DoorDash pays weekly via direct deposit (every Monday). You can also use Fast Pay to cash out daily — Fees apply. DasherDirect gives you instant access to earnings after deliveries — Subject to approval. Specific eligibility for Fast Pay and DasherDirect is shown in the Dasher app once your account is active.

Are Dashers employees of DoorDash?

No. Dashers are 1099 independent contractors — not W-2 employees of DoorDash. You're your own boss, you control your own schedule, and you're responsible for your own taxes (we cover the tax piece in our mileage tracking guide and our I didn't track my mileage panic guide).

Can I sign up for DoorDash in Spanish? (¿Puedo aplicar para DoorDash en español?)

Yes. The DoorDash sign-up flow and Dasher app both support Spanish in US markets. Start at northvilletech.co/dasher and adjust your phone or browser language settings as needed.

Can I dash in Canada with a G1 or G2 license?

DoorDash Canada has separate Dasher requirements from the US program. For Canadian-specific eligibility (including provincial license-class rules), see DoorDash's "Canada Dasher Sign Up" Help Center article and the Canadian Dasher sign-up flow.

What happens if my background check is delayed?

Per DoorDash's published Signup Process, the typical window is 5 to 7 business days. If yours is still pending past that window, log into your Checkr candidate portal (link is in your original Checkr email) to see the status. If Checkr shows the check is clear but your Dasher account hasn't activated, contact DoorDash Support through the in-app chat.

Can I dash with an older car?

Per DoorDash's "Requirements for Dashing" article: "there are no specific vehicle requirements" for car delivery, and DoorDash does not publish a minimum model year. The car needs a valid registration, valid personal auto insurance, and to be operational.

What if I don't have insurance in my own name?

DoorDash requires active auto insurance covering the vehicle you'll dash with. Whether a household-member policy satisfies this depends on the policy terms and on your state's insurance requirements. Confirm with your insurer that the vehicle you'll dash with is covered for personal use; DoorDash's commercial coverage applies only during active deliveries.
