If you're cleaning up Empower, there are two distinct flows depending on what you want to remove. This guide walks through both: removing a single linked account from your dashboard, and deleting your entire Empower Personal Dashboard account.

The single most important thing to know: There are two different products called "Empower."

(1) Empower Personal Dashboard (formerly Personal Capital) — the free net-worth tracker / advisory platform. This guide's main focus.

(2) Empower app (formerly Empower Finance) — the budgeting/cash-advance app. Has a paid subscription. For Apple-billed cancellation, use iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → Empower.

Determine which Empower you have

  • You pay Empower a monthly subscription feeEmpower app (the budgeting app, separate cancellation).
  • You use Empower's net-worth dashboard for freeEmpower Personal Dashboard (steps below).
  • You have an Empower Wealth Management managed account → contact your advisor directly to terminate management.

Remove a single linked account from your dashboard

Use this when you want to disconnect a specific bank or brokerage from Empower without deleting your entire Empower account. This is irreversible — Empower deletes all transactions and data associated with the linked account.

  1. Open the Empower app and tap Login; sign into your account.
  2. Tap the linked account you want to remove from your profile.
  3. Tap the pencil icon next to the account name.
  4. Scroll down and select Remove.
  5. Confirm the removal by tapping Remove again.

The account and its history are gone from your Empower dashboard.

Delete your entire Empower Personal Dashboard account

Use this when you want to fully remove your Empower account and all data.

  1. Click the down arrow next to your name in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Delete User Account.
  4. Enter your Empower Personal Dashboard account password to confirm your identity.
  5. Type DELETE in all-caps to confirm deletion.

Empower processes the deletion per their data-retention policy.

Cancel the Empower app subscription (if applicable)

If you're a paid subscriber to the Empower app (formerly Empower Finance), the cancellation is in-app:

  1. Open the Empower app.
  2. Go to the More section in the bottom-right corner of the app.
  3. Tap Billing.
  4. At the bottom of the next page, tap Cancel subscription.
  5. Complete the cancellation flow.

Important: deleting the app does NOT unsubscribe you. You must use the in-app cancel flow.

If you signed up via Apple App Store

If your subscription is Apple-billed (receipt from APPLE.COM/BILL), cancel through iOS:

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings.
  2. Tap your Apple ID name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Find Empower.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription.

If you signed up via Google Play

Cancel through Google Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Empower → Cancel.

Empower Wealth Management

If you're a managed-account client paying advisory fees:

  1. Contact your dedicated Empower advisor (info in your account dashboard).
  2. Discuss the wind-down plan — liquidating positions, transferring assets, tax implications.
  3. Sign the account-closure paperwork they send.
  4. After assets transfer out, the advisory relationship ends.
  5. The Personal Dashboard (free aggregator) can be kept or deleted separately.

This is not a self-service flow — managed accounts require advisor coordination.

Common cancellation errors and fixes

"Cancel subscription button not visible" — you may be Apple-billed or Google-billed — cancel through Apple Settings or Google Play.

"I deleted the app but I'm still being charged" — deleting the app does NOT cancel the subscription. Reinstall the app and complete the in-app cancel flow, or cancel through Apple Settings / Google Play if that's your billing channel.

"Charge after canceling" — either the cancel didn't process (check email for confirmation) or the charge was for the prepaid period before cancel took effect.

"Personal Dashboard advisor outreach won't stop" — the Personal Dashboard's free tier sometimes triggers advisor-team outreach. Settings → Notifications → opt out, or specifically request "no advisor contact" from support.

Locked out of account — use the password reset flow. If that fails, contact support — Empower is a financial company so identity verification may be required.

Why people leave Empower

Common reasons:

  • App subscription users: cash-advance fees, finding cheaper alternatives.
  • Personal Dashboard users: preference for Empower's competitor or completed their financial planning need.
  • Wealth Management users: moving to lower-fee robo-advisors, finding a cheaper RIA.
