Rocket Money is one of the best tools available for finding and canceling subscriptions you’ve forgotten about. The free plan shows you every recurring charge across your linked accounts. The Premium plan unlocks Rocket Money’s Subscription Cancellation Assistant, which can submit a cancellation request on your behalf for any subscription Rocket Money currently supports — coverage varies by merchant.

In my own audit, Rocket Money surfaced $720/year in subscriptions I’d forgotten about. Four were canceled inside the app via the Cancellation Assistant. One required the Concierge service (it was a gym contract that needed 30-day written notice). And two I had to cancel myself with the provider — Rocket Money flagged them but couldn’t submit the cancellation.

Rocket Money detects subscriptions by scanning your transaction history. The more accounts you link, the more complete the picture.

When you first sign up, Rocket Money walks you through connecting accounts via Plaid, a read-only bank-connection provider used by most major fintech apps. Link every card and bank account you use to pay for things — otherwise subscriptions on an unlinked card won’t show up.

Once your accounts are connected, Rocket Money typically surfaces your subscriptions within 24–48 hours as it pulls in your full transaction history.

Step 2: Open the Recurring tab and review your subscriptions

This is where the entire workflow lives. Rocket Money calls it the Recurring tab.

On mobile: the Recurring tab is along the bottom of the screen.

On web (rocketmoney.com): the Recurring tab is along the left side.

Once you’re in the Recurring tab, you’ll see a default view of detected subscriptions. To see the complete list — including ones Rocket Money may have categorized but not surfaced as active — tap the All heading on mobile, or click View All on the website.

You’ll see every recurring charge Rocket Money found: streaming services, software subscriptions, gym memberships, insurance, and anything else that hits your accounts on a regular schedule. Each entry shows the monthly and annual cost. For most people, seeing the annual total is the moment it clicks — that $12.99/month you forgot about has cost you $155.88 this year.


Step 3: Decide what to keep, cancel, or ignore

Go through each subscription and mark it as one of three things:

  • Keep — services you use and want to keep
  • Cancel — things you want gone
  • Not a subscription — if Rocket Money misidentified something (e.g., a one-off purchase that looked recurring)

Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used it in three months, you’re not going to start.

Some common forgotten subscriptions people find when they run their first audit:

  • Old streaming services (Paramount+, Peacock, AMC+, etc.)
  • Unused app subscriptions (dating apps, productivity tools, photo editors)
  • Free trials that auto-converted to paid plans
  • Duplicate services (two cloud-storage subscriptions, two music apps)
  • Annual renewals (domain registrations, software licenses, VPNs)
  • Services you signed up for at a discount that have since renewed at the full price

Step 4: Cancel via the app — exact tap-by-tap steps

This is the part most other guides skip over. Here are the exact steps Rocket Money’s Help Center documents for using the Subscription Cancellation Assistant, broken down by platform. (Note: the Cancellation Assistant is available to Premium members.)

On mobile (iOS or Android)

  1. Select the Recurring tab along the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap the All heading to see your complete list of subscriptions.
  3. Tap the three dots ”•••” to the right of the subscription you want to cancel and select Cancel.
  4. Tap Cancel This For Me if you want Rocket Money to cancel on your behalf, or tap View Instructions if you’d rather cancel manually.
  5. Fill out the brief form with any details Rocket Money needs (account number, address on file, etc.). Rocket Money takes it from there.

On the web (rocketmoney.com)

  1. Select the Recurring tab along the left of the screen.
  2. Click View All to see your complete list of subscriptions.
  3. Click the three dots ”•••” to the right of the subscription and select Cancel this for me.
  4. Confirm by selecting the Cancel this for me option.
  5. Fill out the brief form. Rocket Money submits the request and tracks it from there.

Free plan: in-app cancellation is limited

The Subscription Cancellation Assistant is a Premium feature. On the free plan, Rocket Money still shows you every recurring charge across your linked accounts and lets you mark subscriptions for cancellation — but the actual submission to the merchant is limited and depends on the merchant. For most subscriptions on the free plan, you’ll cancel directly with the provider by logging into each service and navigating to their cancellation flow.

If the value of the audit alone (typically a few hundred dollars in forgotten subscriptions) outweighs the $7–$14/month Premium price, upgrading is usually worth it.

Step 5: When Rocket Money can’t cancel a subscription

Coverage varies by merchant. If you don’t see a Cancel option for a particular subscription, it means Rocket Money isn’t yet able to cancel that specific subscription on your behalf. Per the Help Center, Rocket Money is continuously adding support for more subscription providers.

When the Cancellation Assistant isn’t available, Rocket Money’s mobile app exposes a View Instructions option that walks you through canceling the subscription yourself directly inside the app. The instructions are specific to that merchant’s cancellation flow.

Step 6: Use the Concierge for harder cancellations

Some subscriptions are deliberately difficult to cancel — gym memberships with mandatory written notice, insurance policies, cable contracts, and services that require a phone call to a retention agent. For many of these, Rocket Money’s Concierge service can handle the cancellation on your behalf, though final outcomes depend on the provider’s process and not every merchant can be cancelled this way.

When you flag a subscription that requires Concierge handling, Rocket Money’s team contacts the provider directly. For gym memberships that require written notice, they send the letter. For services that insist on a phone call to cancel, they make the call. You provide the account details up front and Rocket Money follows up with status updates.

In my own testing, the Concierge handled a gym cancellation that required a 30-day written notice. I didn’t have to do anything after submitting the request — I got a status update the next day, and a confirmation about three weeks later when the gym’s cancellation processed.

To use Concierge, follow the same steps as the in-app Cancellation Assistant in Step 4. Rocket Money will route eligible cancellations to Concierge automatically; you don’t have to choose between the two yourself.


Step 7: Apple App Store and Google Play subscriptions

If a subscription appears in Rocket Money but was purchased through the App Store or Google Play, Rocket Money cannot cancel it on your behalf. You need to cancel it at the source.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Find the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.

On Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top right).
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions.
  4. Tap Subscriptions.
  5. Find the subscription and tap Cancel subscription.

Rocket Money will continue to show these subscriptions in your Recurring tab, but the cancellation goes through Apple or Google, not Rocket Money. After you cancel at the source, the recurring charge should stop on the next billing cycle.


Step 8: Track the status of your cancellation request

After you submit a request through the Cancellation Assistant, you can check the status in two places:

Inside the app: open the Recurring tab and tap the All heading (or View All on web). Pending and completed cancellations show up here, with status updates as Rocket Money works through them.

By email: Rocket Money sends notifications as the cancellation progresses. Watch for the cancellation request received, in-progress, and completion confirmation emails.

A typical cancellation moves through these phases:

  1. Request received
  2. Rocket Money contacts the merchant’s customer support
  3. Account ownership verified
  4. Cancellation request submitted to the provider
  5. Confirmation that the subscription has been terminated

For complex cancellations (like membership contracts requiring written notice), the timeline can stretch — but Rocket Money will keep you in the loop with status updates the entire time.


Step 9: Confirm the cancellation actually worked

A few days after canceling, check back in Rocket Money. The subscription should no longer appear as an active recurring charge in your transaction history.

If a charge still hits your account after cancellation:

  1. Contact the provider directly and reference your cancellation confirmation. Rocket Money keeps a record of cancellations it handled on your behalf — you can pull up the email confirmation or open the subscription inside the Recurring tab to see the cancellation timestamp.
  2. If the provider claims the cancellation didn’t happen, ask Rocket Money’s support team to share their record of the cancellation through the in-app chat.
  3. As a last resort, dispute the charge with your bank or card issuer. Most major card networks let you dispute a charge for a recently cancelled subscription, especially when you have written confirmation.

How long does cancellation take?

Per Rocket Money’s Help Center, most cancellations take 2–10 business days to complete. Some subscriptions can be processed and completed the same day; others (especially those requiring written notice or merchant verification) can extend beyond 10 days.

The factors that affect timing, as listed in the Help Center:

  • The merchant and the complexity of their cancellation flow
  • How quickly Rocket Money can contact the merchant’s customer support team
  • Time to verify your account ownership with the provider
  • Time to process the cancellation request
  • Time to receive confirmation that the subscription has been terminated

Streaming and SaaS services tend to be on the faster end of the range. Memberships that require written notice, contract review, or provider phone confirmation take longer.

What Rocket Money can and can’t cancel

Coverage depends on the merchant. Some subscriptions can be canceled directly inside Rocket Money via the Cancellation Assistant on Premium, some are routed to the Concierge service, and some can’t be canceled through Rocket Money at all and need to be handled manually with the provider.

Where Rocket Money can typically help:

  • Streaming services with self-serve cancellation flows
  • Software and SaaS subscriptions
  • App subscriptions billed through third-party processors (not Apple or Google)
  • Gym memberships, insurance, and cable contracts (via Concierge, subject to the provider’s process)
  • Services that require phone calls (via Concierge)
  • Services requiring written notice (via Concierge)

What requires extra steps or manual action:

  • Subscriptions billed directly through Apple or Google — you’ll cancel those through your App Store or Play Store settings (see Step 7)
  • Services with no standard cancellation path — these may need the Concierge service or manual work
  • Subscriptions Rocket Money’s Cancellation Assistant doesn’t yet support — Rocket Money will surface a View Instructions option for these on mobile so you can cancel yourself
  • Free trials that require the provider to confirm cancellation may take a few days to process even after you submit the request

Whenever you flag a subscription for cancellation, Rocket Money will tell you whether it can handle it for you, route it to the Concierge service, or whether you’ll need to cancel manually.


How much can you save?

In my own audit, Rocket Money found $720/year in subscriptions I wasn’t actively using. That included four in-app cancellations through the Cancellation Assistant and one gym membership routed through Concierge.

Most adults are running more paid subscriptions than they realize — across streaming, software, fitness, and apps. If even two or three of those are forgotten or unused, you could be losing $200–$500 per year on autopilot.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rocket Money free to use for subscription tracking? Yes. The free plan shows all your subscriptions, their costs, and lets you manage them. The Subscription Cancellation Assistant (where the merchant supports it) and the Concierge service require Premium.

Does Rocket Money charge to cancel subscriptions? No. Cancellation through the Subscription Cancellation Assistant is included in Premium, which costs $7–$14/month (you pick the price within that slider). There’s no per-cancellation fee for cancellations. Note that bill negotiation, a separate feature, does charge a success fee on the savings it secures — that’s not the same as cancellation.

What if a subscription I asked Rocket Money to cancel keeps charging me? Contact the provider and reference your cancellation confirmation. If Rocket Money handled the cancellation, you’ll have an email and an in-app record. If the charge continues, you can dispute it with your bank.

How long does cancellation take? Cancellations are typically processed within 2–10 business days, depending on the merchant and complexity. Some same-day cancellations are possible. What does “Cancel This For Me” actually do? When you tap Cancel This For Me in the mobile app (or Cancel this for me on web), Rocket Money’s team contacts the merchant on your behalf, verifies your account, submits the cancellation request, and follows up to confirm. You’ll get email and in-app updates as the request progresses.

What if I don’t see a Cancel option on a subscription? That subscription isn’t currently supported by the Cancellation Assistant. On mobile, you’ll see a View Instructions option instead, which walks you through canceling the subscription yourself with the provider. Rocket Money is continuously adding support for more providers.

Can I cancel an Apple App Store or Google Play subscription through Rocket Money? No. Subscriptions billed through Apple or Google have to be canceled through your App Store or Play Store settings (see Step 7). Rocket Money will still show them in your Recurring tab so you remember to cancel.

Can I cancel my Rocket Money Premium subscription through Rocket Money? Yes — through your account settings inside the app, not through the Cancellation Assistant. Rocket Money has a dedicated Help Center article on managing your Premium membership.

Is the Cancellation Assistant available on iPad/web/desktop? Yes. The Recurring tab is on the bottom of the screen in the iPhone and Android apps, and on the left side on rocketmoney.com. The exact mobile and web flows are in Step 4.
