Dark mode in Rocket Money was one of the most-requested features per the Help Center, and it's now standard. Three options for how to use it: always on, always off (default light), or auto — match whatever your phone's system theme is set to. Most people end up on auto.

This guide covers the setup on iOS, Android, and web, the auto-follow-system option, and what to do if dark mode doesn't seem to apply on a particular screen.

The flow is similar to iOS:

Android's "System Default" is the same concept as iOS's Auto — it follows whatever theme you've set at the OS level. Many Android users have a "light during the day, dark at night" schedule via the OS's "Adaptive theme" or schedule setting; System Default in Rocket Money inherits that schedule.

Step-by-step: enabling dark mode on web

The web version of Rocket Money typically supports dark mode too:

  1. Sign in to rocketmoney.com in your browser.
  2. Click your profile icon or Settings menu.
  3. Find Appearance or Theme.
  4. Pick the option you want.

Some web sessions also respect your browser's or OS's system theme automatically (prefers-color-scheme setting), which means changing your operating system to dark mode flips the web app to dark without an explicit setting in Rocket Money.

Auto-follow-system mode

Auto / Follow System / System Default is the most-popular choice once people know it exists. The behavior:

  • During the day (or when your OS theme is light): Rocket Money is light.
  • At night (or when your OS theme is dark): Rocket Money is dark.
  • The transition happens automatically — no need to toggle Rocket Money manually.

This works well if you've already set up a day/night schedule on your phone. iOS's Settings → Display & Brightness → Automatic and Android's adaptive-theme settings both feed into Rocket Money's Auto mode.

If your OS is always dark or always light, Auto behaves identically to picking that mode explicitly. The benefit is only realized when your OS itself switches.

What to do if dark mode doesn't apply

A few common patterns:

Some screens stay light even after enabling dark mode. Possible cause: a particular screen (a webview, embedded help content, or third-party content like Plaid's bank-linking flow) doesn't inherit Rocket Money's theme. This is normal for some embedded content. The main Rocket Money screens should be dark; embedded browsers/webviews follow their own rules.

Dark mode is on but the app still looks light. Try force-closing the app and reopening. If that doesn't work, sign out and back in. Rare but does happen — the theme cache occasionally needs a refresh.

Dark mode applies but text is hard to read. Some dark-mode color schemes have lower contrast than light mode by design. If a specific screen has unreadable text, that's a UI issue worth reporting to Rocket Money support. Most users find dark mode easier on the eyes overall, but per-screen issues can happen.

Auto / Follow System isn't following. Confirm that your OS itself is set to switch (or that the OS theme is currently the one you expect). If iOS / Android system theme is "always light," then Auto in Rocket Money will be light too — that's correct behavior, even if not what you wanted.

Does dark mode affect Premium features? No — it's purely visual. Every feature works the same.

Is dark mode available on the Free tier? Yes. Dark mode isn't gated behind Premium.

Will my Secondary user (account sharing) inherit my dark mode setting? No — appearance is per-user-per-device. Each user picks their own theme.

Does dark mode save battery on OLED screens? Marginally yes, on phones with OLED displays. Modern iPhones (iPhone X and later, mostly) and many Android flagships have OLED panels where black pixels are actually off; dark mode reduces battery use slightly. The savings are real but small for most users.

Why are some buttons or charts hard to see in dark mode? Some chart elements use brand colors (like Rocket Money's red) that work in both themes; others use defaults that may have lower contrast in dark mode. If a specific element is unreadable, it's a design issue worth flagging to support — but most users find dark mode comfortable.

Can I set different themes for app vs web? Yes — appearance settings are typically per-platform. Setting iOS to dark doesn't change web; setting web to light doesn't change iOS.

Does dark mode affect notification banners or push? Push notifications inherit your phone's notification banner style, not Rocket Money's in-app theme. So your phone's system-level Dark Mode controls notification appearance.
