What DoorDash gift cards cover

  • Order subtotal (the food/groceries you order)
  • Delivery fee
  • Service fee
  • Driver tip
  • Tax (in most jurisdictions)
  • DashPass subscription (yes — gift cards can pay for a DashPass renewal)

What gift cards typically don't cover: - Cash withdrawal - Refund to a different payment method - Transfer to another DoorDash account

How the balance applies at checkout

Once redeemed, the gift card balance shows as a payment method at checkout. DoorDash automatically applies it before charging your default credit/debit card:

  1. Place a DoorDash order normally.
  2. At checkout, the gift card balance shows under Payment with your other methods.
  3. The order subtotal is deducted from the gift card balance first.
  4. If the order exceeds the gift card balance, the remainder charges to your default payment method.
  5. The remaining gift card balance carries over to your next order.

What changes after you redeem

What Effect
Gift card balance Added to your DoorDash account
Visible at checkout Yes, under Payment methods
Expiration Most DoorDash gift cards don't expire (state law varies)
Transferable No — once redeemed, balance is tied to your account
Refundable Generally not — DoorDash gift cards aren't typically refunded for cash

Common gift card errors and fixes

"Gift card code invalid" — check for typos. If still invalid, contact DoorDash support — codes can occasionally be deactivated due to fraud holds.

"Gift card already redeemed" — the code was previously claimed. Contact DoorDash support and the gifter — there may be an issue with how the gift was sent.

"Balance not showing at checkout" — sign out and sign back in. The balance should appear under Payment methods.

"Card balance is wrong" — check Account → Payment for current balance. If it doesn't match what you redeemed, contact DoorDash support.

"Can I split between gift card and credit card?" — yes, DoorDash automatically uses the gift card first and charges the remainder.

"Tip larger than my gift card balance" — same as the order — the gift card covers what it can, the rest charges to default payment.
