The DoorDash Dasher app is reasonably intuitive once you've been using it for a few weeks — but for the first 5 deliveries, every screen has at least one moment of "wait, what does this button do?" This walkthrough is the structured introduction the app itself doesn't quite give you: every screen, tab, and feature you'll touch as a new Dasher, in the order you'll encounter them.
If you're earlier in the journey, see How to Become a DoorDash Driver for the signup flow.

The home/map screen explained
When you open the Dasher app and you're not in an active delivery, you land on the home/map screen. Key elements:
The map. Shows your current location as a pin, with surrounding areas color-coded: - Pink/red shading = "hotspots" (areas with predicted high demand) - Gray = quieter zones - Boundary lines = your dash zone boundaries (you'll be dispatched within this area)
For a deeper read on hotspots, see DoorDash Hotspots Explained.
The "Dash Now" button. Big, central button. Tap to start dashing immediately. If your zone is at capacity, this button may show as "Schedule a Dash" instead.
Status indicator. When you're online and dashing, a green indicator shows. Offline = no indicator.
Earnings preview. Sometimes shows today's running earnings if you've completed deliveries today.
Bottom navigation tabs. Typical layout: - Home/Map (where you are) - Schedule - Earnings - Account - Help (sometimes a menu icon)
Tap the bottom tabs to switch between sections.
Top bar. Usually has app version info, settings shortcut, and sometimes a notification bell.
The offer screen — what each piece means
When an order is offered to you, an offer screen pops up. You typically have ~45 seconds to accept or decline. The screen shows:
Total Pay. The combined dollar amount you'll earn (base pay + tip portion visible at offer + any peak/promo). For specifics on the pay model, see DoorDash's official Dasher Pay article.
Distance. Total miles for the trip (pickup-to-dropoff, sometimes including a current-location-to-pickup leg).
Estimated time. Total minutes the trip should take.
Restaurant name and location. Where you pick up.
Customer drop-off location. Where you deliver. Some markets show full address; others show just the street/zone.
Pay-per-mile or pay-per-minute (sometimes shown). Helps quick mental math on whether the offer is worth taking.
Stack indicator (if it's a stacked order). "+1 more delivery" or similar badging. See DoorDash Stacked Orders Guide.
Special tags. "Catering," "Alcohol," "Large order" — affect pickup/handoff procedures.
Decline / Accept buttons. Big buttons; accept moves you to the active delivery screen. Decline keeps you in queue for the next offer.
For a deep dive on reading offers, see Reading a DoorDash Offer: What Every Number Means.
The active delivery screen
Once you accept an offer, you move to the active delivery screen. Key elements:
Top status bar. Shows current step: "Driving to pickup," "At pickup," "Driving to drop-off," "At drop-off."
Big map. Shows your current location, the next destination, and the route.
Restaurant/customer info card. Name, address, contact options (call, text via app).
Action buttons (vary by stage): - At pickup: "I'm at the restaurant," "Confirm pickup" - Driving to drop-off: "Navigation," "Contact customer" - At drop-off: "Mark complete," "Take delivery photo"
Notes section. Customer's specific delivery instructions appear here. Things like "Leave at door, knock please," "Call when you arrive," "Apt 3B - access code 1234." Read these before arriving.
Order details. What's in the order — food items, drinks, etc. You don't need to verify each item against the order, but glancing at it helps if there's a question at pickup.
Navigation: pickup and drop-off
The Dasher app has built-in navigation that uses Google Maps or Apple Maps under the hood. When you tap "Navigate" in an active delivery:
- Default behavior: opens the map within the Dasher app with turn-by-turn directions.
- Alternative: you can configure the app to open Google Maps or Apple Maps externally for navigation. Account → Settings → Navigation.
Many experienced Dashers prefer Waze or Google Maps externally for better real-time traffic. The trade-off: you'll switch between apps more, but you get better routing.
For the deeper navigation walkthrough, see How DoorDash Navigation Works (Pickup & Drop-off).
The Earnings tab
Tap the Earnings tab to see your running performance:
Today. Total earnings for today, broken down by delivery.
This week. Running weekly earnings, with a Monday-to-Sunday cycle (the day you receive direct deposit, if on weekly direct deposit).
Each delivery. Tap into a single delivery to see the breakdown (base pay, tips, peak pay, etc.) and the customer's tip if shown.
Pay-out info. Your scheduled payout date and amount.
Payment method. Shows which payment method (weekly direct deposit, DasherDirect, Fast Pay) is currently active. Change here if needed. See How to Set Up DasherDirect for Instant Pay.
For specifics on how earnings are calculated, see How DoorDash Driver Pay Works.
The Schedule tab
Tap the Schedule tab to manage scheduled dashes:
Upcoming dashes. Your scheduled time blocks for the next 7 days.
Schedule a Dash. Add a new scheduled dash. See How to Schedule Your First Dash for the step-by-step.
Cancel/edit. Tap an existing scheduled dash to modify or cancel.
Schedule availability map. Some markets show a heatmap of available scheduling slots in your area.

Tap the Account or menu icon (varies by app version) to access:

Tax forms. Access to your 1099-NEC at tax time.
Account management. Pause your account, contact support to deactivate, change credentials.
The Help / Support menu
Tap Help or the support icon to:
Contact support via chat. In-app chat with a Dasher support agent. Best for active delivery issues. Phone numbers and other channels: How to Contact DoorDash Dasher Support.
Help articles. DoorDash's own help center is integrated into the app.
Issue reporting. Report a specific delivery issue (wrong order received, customer issue, etc.).
Feedback. Submit feedback to DoorDash about the app or experience.
The end-of-dash flow
When you're ready to stop dashing:
Step 1 — Complete your current delivery if you're in one. You can't end a dash mid-delivery — you have to finish or unassign first. See DoorDash Ratings, Acceptance, and Completion Rates Explained for unassignment rules.
Step 2 — Tap "End Dash" when you're between deliveries. The app may prompt you to confirm.
Step 3 — Confirm. You're now offline. No more offers will come.
Step 4 — Review your earnings. The app shows a summary of the dash — total earnings, miles, time online, deliveries completed.
Step 5 — Drive home. Done.
If you're using DasherDirect, your earnings have already been deposited. If you're on weekly direct deposit, the earnings are tallying up for next Monday's payout.
Order on DoorDash DashPass for unlimited reduced-fee delivery on eligible restaurants and grocery partners. New users often get $0 delivery on first orders. Open DoorDash →
FAQ
Why does my app keep pausing during a dash? Common issue. Usually app permissions or location services. See DoorDash Dasher App Troubleshooting for fixes.
Can I use the Dasher app on a tablet? Technically yes, but it's optimized for phones. Most Dashers use phones.
Does the Dasher app work on iPad with cellular data? Yes, but the experience is awkward — it's designed for phone-sized screens.
Can I use the Dasher app in airplane mode? No. Continuous internet connection is required for receiving offers and updating delivery status.
Will the app work without GPS? GPS is required for dispatching, navigation, and proof-of-delivery. Without it, the app won't function for active delivery.
Why does the app shut down at red lights or in parking lots? Sometimes a battery-saver setting on Android closes apps in the background. See DoorDash Dasher App Troubleshooting for the Android-specific fix.
Can I sign in to my Dasher account on multiple devices? You can sign in on multiple devices but should only be actively dashing on one at a time. Account-sharing across people violates DoorDash's terms.
What's CarPlay support like? The Dasher app supports CarPlay in newer versions. See DoorDash Dasher App Troubleshooting for setup specifics.
