If Rocket Money keeps failing to connect to a specific bank or card — but other accounts work fine — the issue is almost always institution-specific. Each bank has unique connection patterns, MFA flows, and Plaid integration quirks. This guide walks through the most-asked banks (SoFi, Wells Fargo, Synchrony, Amex, Discover, Fidelity, Chime, Cash App, Coinbase, Webull, Navy Federal) plus general fixes that apply to most institutions.

What's in this guide

General fixes — try these first

Before diving into institution-specific troubleshooting, try these (they fix 60% of connection issues):

  1. Update the Rocket Money app to the latest version.
  2. Sign out and sign back in to Rocket Money.
  3. Verify your bank credentials work by signing into the bank's app/website directly.
  4. Disable any VPN before reconnecting — Plaid sometimes blocks VPN traffic.
  5. Use the bank's official app, not third-party when bank-side authentication is required.
  6. Re-enable browser cookies/storage if connecting via web.
  7. Try connecting via the browser instead of mobile app (or vice versa). Sometimes Plaid's mobile and web flows differ.
  8. Wait 30 minutes if you got a connection error — Plaid sometimes rate-limits.

If the issue persists after trying these, jump to your bank below.

SoFi

Common issue: "Rocket Money can't connect to SoFi" or "connection expired."

Fixes: 1. SoFi requires its own bank-side MFA during initial connection. Have your phone ready for the SMS or app-prompt. 2. SoFi's banking products and investing products are sometimes separate Plaid endpoints — try connecting them individually. 3. If you have 2FA enabled on SoFi, enter the code in the Plaid prompt within 60 seconds (it expires fast). 4. SoFi recently migrated some user accounts (2024-2025); if your account moved to the new platform, the old Plaid connection may be stale. Disconnect and reconnect. 5. Contact SoFi support if the bank-side connection fails repeatedly — sometimes accounts are flagged for security review.

Wells Fargo

Common issue: "Wells Fargo connection failed" or repeated MFA prompts.

Fixes: 1. Wells Fargo uses multi-step MFA including device authentication. Allow Plaid as a "trusted device" on Wells Fargo's site before trying to reconnect. 2. OTP via SMS sometimes fails — switch to email OTP if available. 3. Wells Fargo periodically requires identity reverification via direct deposit verification or document upload. Resolve that on Wells Fargo's side first. 4. If you have multiple Wells Fargo accounts (checking, credit card, mortgage), Plaid may not pull all of them. Ensure all are checked during the link flow. 5. App version matters — Wells Fargo's web flow is more reliable than its mobile app for Plaid linking in some cases.

American Express (Amex)

Common issue: "Amex connection won't establish" or the account links but no transactions show.

Fixes: 1. Amex requires the primary cardholder's credentials. Authorized users can't link the card to Plaid. 2. 2FA on Amex must be approved within 5 minutes of the prompt. 3. If you have business + personal Amex accounts, link them separately — Plaid treats them as different institutions. 4. Amex sometimes caches an old Plaid connection — log into amex.com → Profile → Authorized Apps → revoke Rocket Money/Plaid → reconnect. 5. Some Amex co-branded cards (e.g., Delta SkyMiles, Hilton Honors) connect via slightly different flows. If your Amex shows but transactions don't, give it 24-48 hours; the first sync sometimes lags.

Discover

Common issue: "Discover not syncing" or transactions are days behind.

Fixes: 1. Discover's Plaid integration has been historically slower than other major issuers — initial sync can take 24-48 hours. 2. Use Discover's online banking credentials, not the mobile app PIN. 3. 2FA via Discover app can interrupt — disable it temporarily if needed for the link, then re-enable. 4. Discover's "Cashback Bonus" and "Discover It Miles" are tracked separately — link both if you have them. 5. If transactions never sync after 48 hours, disconnect and reconnect — sometimes the initial connection got stuck.

Fidelity

Common issue: "Fidelity won't connect" or only some accounts visible.

Fixes: 1. Fidelity's multi-account login can confuse Plaid. Make sure you're logging in with the owner credentials (not a delegated user). 2. HSA, 401k, brokerage, and IRA accounts all sit under different Fidelity logins for some users. You may need to link each separately. 3. Fidelity recently (2024-2025) migrated some accounts between platforms; old Plaid links may be stale. 4. Two-factor authentication is mandatory on Fidelity — make sure it's set up before linking. 5. If you have employer-sponsored 401(k) at Fidelity, the Plaid integration sometimes treats it as separate from your personal Fidelity. Look for an "Add Account" option.

Synchrony

Common issue: "Synchrony bank not connecting" — usually for store-branded credit cards (Amazon, Lowe's, etc.).

Fixes: 1. Synchrony powers many store cards but each has its own login portal. Use the portal that matches your card (e.g., Amazon Store Card vs Lowe's Synchrony). 2. Some Synchrony cards aren't fully Plaid-supported yet — confirmed unsupported include some closed-loop store cards. 3. If your store card uses Synchrony, the Plaid connection may show under "Synchrony Bank" rather than the store name. Search for "Synchrony" in Plaid's institution list. 4. Synchrony's 2FA via SMS is brittle — prefer email if offered.

Chime

Common issue: "Chime won't link" or "credentials rejected."

Fixes: 1. Chime requires the password used in the Chime app (not a separate online banking password — Chime is mobile-first). 2. Chime's 2FA prompt comes through the Chime app, not SMS. Open the Chime app to approve when Plaid is mid-link. 3. If Chime asks for a profile photo or document upload, complete those identity verifications first — Plaid can't link until your Chime account is fully verified. 4. Chime spending account vs savings vs Credit Builder Card sometimes need separate links.

Cash App

Common issue: "Cash App connection failed."

Fixes: 1. Cash App's integration with Plaid is limited — it works for some users and not others, depending on account features. 2. You'll need your Cash App login PIN at link time. 3. Cash App's balance shows in Rocket Money, but transaction history detail may be limited (just totals, not item-level). 4. If repeatedly failing, manual import via CSV is an alternative. Download Cash App transactions → import to Rocket Money. See How to Add Transactions Manually in Rocket Money.

Coinbase

Common issue: "Coinbase doesn't sync" or "balance shows but no transactions."

Fixes: 1. Coinbase's Plaid integration is read-only and limited — Rocket Money can pull balance and recent transactions but not full crypto history. 2. API key access via Coinbase Pro / Advanced Trade isn't supported by Plaid for Rocket Money — use the consumer Coinbase login. 3. 2FA on Coinbase is strictly enforced; have your authenticator app ready.

Webull

Common issue: Webull listed but won't connect.

Fixes: 1. Webull's Plaid support varies by account type (cash account vs margin vs IRA). Check your specific account in Webull settings. 2. Webull's app-only authentication can complicate Plaid — log into Webull on web first to verify credentials work, then try Plaid.

Common issue: "Navy Federal won't link" — credit union connections are notoriously fickle.

Fixes: 1. Navy Federal supports Plaid but has strict MFA requirements — they may text or call your phone of record for verification. 2. Account number + last 4 of SSN sometimes asked instead of password. 3. NFCU's app-based push notifications are the preferred 2FA — accept within 60 seconds of Plaid prompting. 4. If multiple times fail, contact NFCU member service to ensure your account permits external aggregator access (some accounts have it disabled by default).

certain premium credit cards

Common issue: "certain premium credit cards not connecting."

Fixes: 1. certain premium credit cards supports Plaid as of late 2024, but connection is iPhone-only — you can't link via web or Android. 2. Open Rocket Money on iPhone → link account → search "certain premium credit cards" → use Apple ID + certain premium credit cards credentials. 3. Cash flow showing wrong direction is a known initial-sync issue — wait 48 hours for the first refresh.

PayPal

Common issue: "PayPal won't connect."

Fixes: 1. PayPal requires password + verification code via email or phone — both must be ready. 2. PayPal Business and PayPal Personal are separate logins — make sure you're using the right one. 3. PayPal Credit is a separate account (Synchrony-issued) and links separately. 4. If linking fails, try re-authenticating in PayPal first (paypal.com → Account → Trusted Apps → revoke old Plaid/Rocket Money → reconnect).

If your bank is unsupported

If your bank doesn't show in Plaid's list at all:

  • It's not yet integrated. Plaid adds banks regularly — check back in 1-3 months.
  • Manual import via CSV works for most banks. See How to Add Transactions Manually in Rocket Money.
  • Some smaller banks/credit unions only integrate via "MX" (a different aggregator); Rocket Money primarily uses Plaid.
  • Contact Rocket Money support to request the institution.
Most connection issues resolve in under 5 minutes with the bank-specific fixes above. If you've tried these and still can't connect, contact Rocket Money support with your bank name and the exact error message.

FAQ

Why does Rocket Money keep disconnecting from my bank?

Plaid connections expire periodically (typically 60-90 days) and require re-authentication. See Why Does Rocket Money Keep Disconnecting? for the deeper explanation.

Is Plaid safe?

Plaid is the same connection layer used by Venmo, Robinhood, Wealthfront, and many other consumer finance apps. It uses bank-grade encryption and read-only access. See Is Rocket Money Safe? for the full security breakdown.

Will my bank know I'm using Rocket Money?

Yes — your bank sees Plaid as a third-party app you've authorized. They can see when Rocket Money queries data but don't typically take action on it. Some banks email you about the connection; that's normal.

Yes. Rocket Money supports unlimited bank connections. Add each via the same flow.

Does linking my bank cost anything?

No, linking is free regardless of plan. Premium features apply to your linked accounts but the link itself isn't charged.

What if Plaid prompts ask for credentials I don't recognize?

Don't enter them. Verify the prompt is genuinely from Rocket Money/Plaid (not a phishing attempt). Real Plaid prompts always come from within the Rocket Money app or via a verified Plaid URL.

Why are my transactions days behind?

Transaction sync is bank-dependent. Some banks update Plaid every 4-6 hours; others daily; a few only every few days. Discover and Fidelity are particularly slow.

Can I disconnect a bank without losing my budget data?

Yes. Disconnect removes the live link but keeps historical transactions. See How to Disconnect a Bank from Rocket Money.

Will Rocket Money connect to international banks?

Currently US-focused. Some Canadian and UK banks are partially supported but coverage is limited. See Linking International Banks to Rocket Money.

What's the difference between linking via Plaid vs MX?

Plaid is Rocket Money's primary aggregator. MX is an alternative used by some apps but not Rocket Money. If a bank only integrates via MX, it won't appear in Rocket Money.
