If your Rocket Money balance looks off — different from what your bank's app shows, or hasn't moved despite recent activity — the cause is usually one of three things, and only one of them is a real "something is broken" scenario. This guide walks through each in order, tells you exactly what to check, and shows you the difference between a normal sync delay and an actual connection problem worth troubleshooting.

The short version: Rocket Money refreshes balances automatically once every 24 hours, Premium adds an on-demand Sync button, and investment accounts behave differently from checking and credit accounts on purpose.

How often Rocket Money refreshes balances

Per Rocket Money's Help Center: linked accounts automatically update once every 24 hours. If a transaction happened after the last refresh, it'll show up at the next scheduled sync — not immediately.

This is by design, not a limitation. Plaid (the connection layer Rocket Money uses) makes scheduled pulls from each linked institution to keep API load reasonable on the bank's side. Most users never notice because the daily refresh is enough — but it does mean that:

  • A debit card swipe at lunch won't appear until late tonight or tomorrow.
  • A direct deposit that hit at 6 a.m. might still be missing at 9 a.m.
  • A bill auto-paid this morning may not show up in Rocket Money for several hours.

If you compare your bank's app to Rocket Money side by side at any random moment, the bank app will almost always be slightly more current. That's the design, not a bug.

The Premium-only manual Sync button

Rocket Money Premium adds a manual Sync Account button, useful when you don't want to wait for the 24-hour auto-refresh. From Rocket Money's Help Center: "Tapping Sync refreshes your balance view for your linked accounts."

On mobile (Premium):

  1. Tap the Settings (⚙️) icon in the upper-left of the Dashboard.
  2. Tap Linked Accounts.
  3. Tap the three dots (…) next to the account you want to sync, then choose View.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap Sync Account.

On desktop web (Premium):

  1. Tap the Settings (⚙️) icon in the upper-left of the Dashboard.
  2. Tap Linked Accounts.
  3. Tap View next to the account you want to sync.
  4. Tap Sync Account in the lower-right corner.

A note from Rocket Money worth highlighting verbatim: "While it can bring in updated info, it doesn't always reflect real-time data — some banks take longer to report transaction activity." A manual sync isn't magic — Plaid still has to fetch from the bank, and some banks are slow on the back end. The Sync button bumps Rocket Money to the front of the line for a fresh pull, but it can't accelerate the bank itself.

If you're on the free tier and need a fresh balance, your options are: (1) wait for the next auto-sync, (2) check your bank's app directly for the live number, or (3) upgrade to Premium for the manual sync. There's no workaround that gets a free-tier user a faster refresh than the 24-hour cycle.

Investment accounts behave differently

This is the source of more "wrong balance" confusion than anything else, especially for users tracking 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage accounts, or HSAs in Rocket Money.

Per the Help Center: "Most investment accounts only show updated balances, not individual transactions. Since investment accounts don't show transactions, the balance may seem off if you're trying to track your spending — but this is expected."

What that means in practice:

  • No transaction-level detail. You won't see individual buys, sells, dividends, or fund-level activity the way you would in your brokerage's own app.
  • Balance updates lag intra-day moves. If the market is up 2% today, your investment-account balance in Rocket Money won't reflect that until the next sync — and even then, the balance is typically the previous market close, not real-time.
  • It's not designed for trading or portfolio analysis. Rocket Money treats investment accounts as a contributor to your net worth, not as a portfolio-management tool. If your wrong-balance complaint is about an investment account specifically — and the off number is a few percent rather than wildly wrong — that's the expected behavior. It's not a connection issue.

When a stale balance is actually a connection problem

The scenarios above are normal. Here's when "wrong balance" actually means broken connection:

  • The balance hasn't updated in weeks or months, not just hours or days.
  • New transactions you can clearly see in your bank's app are missing from Rocket Money entirely (not just the most recent few — but everything since a specific date).
  • Multiple accounts at the same bank all stopped updating around the same time.
  • You see the "An account requires attention" banner on the Dashboard.

Per the Help Center: "If your balance hasn't updated in weeks or months, it might be a connection issue. This can happen if your bank has made changes or if Plaid, our secure linking provider is having trouble accessing your account."

Pending vs posted transactions

A separate flavor of "wrong balance" is the gap between what your bank shows as available balance vs posted balance. This isn't a Rocket Money issue — it's a banking convention — but it explains a lot of off-by-a-bit numbers.

  • Available balance is what your bank's app usually shows on the home screen. It's the running total after pending transactions are subtracted.
  • Posted balance is the amount that has actually cleared and been booked to the account.

Plaid pulls a balance from the bank — usually the available figure — but bank-side timing on what's pending vs posted varies. If a charge is pending in your bank's app and Rocket Money pulled the balance before that pending charge was reflected, the two will differ by exactly that pending amount.

Wait one cycle. The numbers normally reconcile within 24 hours.

How to fix a wrong balance, step by step

Run through these in order. Stop as soon as one resolves the issue.

  1. Confirm the discrepancy is more than the 24-hour window. If the missing transaction or balance change happened in the last day, just wait. Auto-sync runs once every 24 hours.
  2. Cross-check against your bank's app. Open your bank's mobile app or website. Confirm the "correct" balance you're expecting is actually what your bank shows — sometimes the discrepancy is a pending transaction or hold you didn't know about.
  3. Premium: tap Sync Account. Settings → Linked Accounts → three dots → View → Sync Account. This pulls a fresh balance now instead of waiting for the daily refresh.
  4. Free: wait for the next auto-sync. No Sync button on the free tier. The auto-refresh handles it.
  5. Check the Account Connection Status. Look for the "An account requires attention" banner or open Settings → Linked Accounts and check status icons. If anything is disconnected, run the Fix Connection flow.
  6. If still wrong after a relink — contact Rocket Money support. Per the Help Center, start a chat from inside the app and provide an example of a specific missing transaction. The support team can investigate why the bank-side data isn't flowing through.

How this compares to YNAB, Empower, and Monarch

The 24-hour auto-refresh + Premium-only manual sync is one of Rocket Money's most distinctive design choices, and worth comparing against the others:

YNAB. Direct Import refreshes more frequently (every few hours for many institutions) and is included in the base subscription — there is no free tier of YNAB, but everyone who pays gets the more aggressive sync cadence. Manual refresh is a one-tap action on every paid account.

Empower. Free, and refreshes investment accounts more aggressively than Rocket Money does — typically several times per day. This makes sense given Empower's investment-tracking focus. Less aggressive on transaction-level cash account updates.

Monarch. Refresh cadence sits between Rocket Money and YNAB. Manual refresh is one tap and included in the standard Monarch plan ($14.99/month or $99.99/year). No free-tier hobble.

Why is the balance in Rocket Money higher than my bank's available balance? Likely because Rocket Money's last sync ran before a pending transaction posted. Wait one cycle and they should reconcile. If the gap is consistent and large (e.g., the same $200 difference every day), it may be a pending hold your bank is showing but Plaid isn't pulling — that's worth a Rocket Money support chat.

Why doesn't Rocket Money show me real-time balances? Bank-side rate limits and the design of the underlying aggregator (Plaid) push toward scheduled batch sync rather than real-time pull. Real-time would require a different connection model (push-based or persistent), which most U.S. banks don't expose to third-party aggregators.

Can I force a sync on the free tier? Not directly. The Sync Account button is a Premium feature. The free tier auto-syncs once per 24 hours; you can't manually trigger a refresh outside that.

The balance is right but a specific transaction is missing — same issue? Often, yes. If the balance is current but a specific charge isn't appearing as a line item, that charge is either still pending on the bank side, or has been categorized in a way that's hiding it from your Transactions list. Check the Transactions tab and filter by date.

Why does my credit card show a positive balance? Some credit cards report balances with the sign flipped relative to checking accounts (e.g., your $500 card balance might show as -$500). This is a display convention, not a wrong number. Tapping into the account shows the full statement detail.
