DoorDash started as a restaurant delivery app and has expanded dramatically — now delivering from grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, liquor stores, pet supply, and more. But the rules around what's actually allowed get complicated fast: alcohol has age verification, prescriptions go through a separate flow, cigarettes/vapes are state-restricted, and cash payments aren't accepted at all. This guide is a definitive reference covering every category, plus the edge cases (hotel delivery, leave-at-door for restricted items, etc.).

Restaurants & prepared food
The original DoorDash use case. All major chains (McDonald's, Chipotle, Olive Garden, etc.) plus tens of thousands of independent restaurants. Hot prepared food is the bulk of orders.
Key edge cases:
- Catering orders — large multi-portion orders for events. Available; some restaurants use a separate Catering category. See DoorDash Catering & Alcohol Delivery.
- Drive-thru-only chains — most have integrated DoorDash partnerships now (e.g., Chick-fil-A in most markets).
- Restaurants closed at the time of order — DoorDash blocks orders to closed restaurants.
Grocery & convenience stores
Major grocery chains: Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Sprouts, Aldi, Publix, Food Lion, H-E-B, Wegmans, Meijer, Kroger.
Convenience: 7-Eleven, Wawa, Casey's, Sheetz, Speedway, Loves, Circle K (where partnered).
Order flow: similar to restaurants but with longer prep times (15-30 min as the picker walks the store) and a substitution policy at the item level.

Alcohol — beer, wine, liquor
DoorDash delivers alcohol in most U.S. states where it's legal:
- Beer/wine — most grocery and liquor stores.
- Spirits/liquor — typically only liquor stores; some grocery markets (e.g., California's some, Florida) include limited spirits.
Required at delivery:
- 21+ age verification — Dasher must check ID. You'll typically need to be present and show a government-issued photo ID.
- Recipient must not be visibly intoxicated — Dashers are required to refuse delivery if the recipient seems impaired.
- Delivery location — usually requires a residential address. Some hotels, public spaces, and offices have restrictions.
If no one's home (or no ID is shown), the Dasher returns the alcohol to the restaurant/store. You're typically refunded the food portion but charged a return-trip fee on alcohol items.
States where alcohol delivery is NOT supported as of writing: AL, KY, MS, OK, RI, UT — confirm current status as laws change.
Leave at door for alcohol? Generally no — most states require in-person ID check. Some states permit alcohol leave-at-door with photo ID upload via app, but this is rare.
Prescription medications
DoorDash is the courier for prescription delivery from CVS, Walgreens, and select regional pharmacies. The flow is:
- Order through the pharmacy's own app/site (CVS app, Walgreens app, etc.).
- The pharmacy uses DoorDash as the delivery courier on the back end.
- ID verification at delivery for controlled substances.
Important: you cannot drop a prescription into a regular DoorDash cart. The flow is initiated through the pharmacy. DoorDash partners with the pharmacy on logistics, not on order placement for prescriptions.
Federal-controlled substances (opioids, ADHD meds, etc.): typically require in-person pickup with ID under federal law. Some states allow same-day delivery for certain Schedule III-V drugs.
For OTC medicine (no prescription), see the next section.
Over-the-counter medicine
You can order OTC medicine directly through the regular DoorDash flow. The category is broad — pain relievers, cold/flu, allergy, first aid, vitamins, baby care, etc.
See our deep-dive: How to Order Over-the-Counter Medicines from DoorDash.
Cigarettes, vapes, and tobacco
Cigarettes are deliverable in some U.S. states (varies by state law and DoorDash retailer agreements):
- CA, NY, IL, FL, TX — generally available where retailers partner.
- Some states prohibit tobacco delivery entirely.
- Vapes are even more restricted — federal PACT Act restrictions limit vape deliverability.
Required at delivery:
- 21+ age verification — federal minimum age for tobacco purchases since 2019.
- ID check at door, no leave-at-door.
If your state shows no tobacco/vape options at convenience stores in DoorDash, it's likely state-restricted. There's no workaround — laws supersede DoorDash policies.
Pet supply and pet food
DoorDash delivers from PetSmart, Petco, and many grocery stores' pet aisles. Delivery options for:
- Dry/wet pet food.
- Litter, bedding, toys.
- Some prescription pet medications (similar Rx flow as for human meds).
Standard order flow — no special verification.
Flowers, plants, and gifts
DoorDash partners with 1-800-Flowers, Petals.com, and many local florists for flower delivery. Available in most metro areas. Delivery timing depends on the florist; same-day common for orders placed before 2 PM.
Some grocery stores' floral departments are also on DoorDash.
Hotel and apartment delivery
Yes, DoorDash delivers to hotels and apartments — but with caveats:
- Apartment delivery — provide unit number, gate code, and any access instructions in delivery notes. Some apartment buildings require Dasher to wait at lobby for buzzer entry; others let them up to your door.
- Hotel delivery — some hotels accept and forward DoorDash; others require the recipient to come to the lobby. Specify "hotel" in your delivery instructions.
- Resort delivery — varies by property; some have strict no-outside-food policies that can prevent DoorDash entry.
- Hospital delivery — generally permitted, with specific patient room instructions.
- Office/workplace delivery — usually fine; specify suite or department.
For alcohol delivery to a hotel, the recipient must come to the door for ID — front desk typically can't accept alcohol on your behalf.
What DoorDash can't deliver
Categories DoorDash either won't deliver or can't deliver due to legal restrictions:
- Hot food to a different state — orders must originate from a local restaurant within driving distance.
- Live animals — pet adoptions, fish, birds.
- Firearms / ammunition — no delivery, federal restrictions.
- Marijuana / cannabis products — federally illegal; not on DoorDash even in states with legal recreational marijuana.
- Lottery tickets — usually restricted by state law on third-party sales.
- Bulk hazardous materials (large fuel containers, certain chemicals).
- Items requiring in-person installation (appliances, furniture beyond small ready-to-assemble).
- Adult novelty items / pornography — typically not on DoorDash, unlike Uber Eats which has some flexibility.
Payment restrictions (no cash)
DoorDash does not accept cash for any order. Accepted payment methods:
- Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover).
- Debit cards.
- PayPal.
- Venmo (in supported markets).
- Apple Pay / Google Pay.
- DoorDash gift card balance.
- EBT / SNAP card (for eligible grocery items only — see How to Use SNAP/EBT on DoorDash).
- Some prepaid cards (must work like a regular debit/credit card).
You cannot pay your Dasher in cash on delivery. All payment is processed through DoorDash before the order is placed. The Dasher carries no cash exchange responsibility.

FAQ
Can DoorDash deliver alcohol to a hotel?
Yes, if the recipient comes to the door for ID verification. Hotels typically can't accept alcohol on a guest's behalf.
Can I add cigarettes to my food order?
Only if the cigarettes are at the same retailer (e.g., a convenience store also serving food). Cross-store orders aren't possible — each cart is from one merchant.
Can DoorDash deliver to a parked car?
Generally no — Dashers deliver to a fixed address, not a car. Some specific parking-lot delivery setups exist for larger events, but standard delivery isn't to a vehicle.
Can I buy gift cards through DoorDash?
DoorDash sells DoorDash gift cards directly. Other retailer gift cards (Target, Visa, etc.) are usually not on DoorDash; you'd order them from the retailer directly.
Can DoorDash deliver to a P.O. Box?
No. P.O. boxes don't accept third-party delivery. Use a residential address or commercial mail receiving (UPS Store, etc.).
Can DoorDash deliver lottery tickets in my state?
Almost never — most states restrict lottery sales to in-person at licensed retailers. Some online purchase is permitted via state lottery websites; DoorDash isn't a vendor.
Can DoorDash deliver to a college dorm?
Yes. Provide dorm name, room number, and any building access instructions. Some campuses have a central drop-off rather than door-to-door — the dasher follows campus rules.
Can I get DoorDash delivered overnight (3 AM)?
Yes if a 24-hour merchant is open at that hour (some grocery stores, fast-food chains, gas stations). Coverage thin overnight in smaller markets.
Can DoorDash deliver firearms ammunition?
No. Federal law restricts ammunition shipping to specific licensed channels; not via DoorDash.
Can I tip the Dasher in cash if I want to add to my tip post-delivery?
You can hand the Dasher cash if you want to top up your tip — that's a personal exchange, not a DoorDash transaction. DoorDash doesn't track or process it. The original tip on your order goes through the app normally.
